The Story of the Autograph

Juan Bereguer is a former right-handed starting and relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1978 to 1992. During that time he was with the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals (twice), Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and Atlanta Braves.

Berenguer is a native of Panama. He was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in January of 1975. He made his major league debut with them on August 17, 1978. He played sparingly through his first three seasons in New York. The Mets traded him to the Royals in March of 1981, but he didn’t spend the whole season with themand moved on to the Blue Jays before the end of the season.

In 1982 he moved on the Tigers as a free agent. As a starter in 1984 he went 11-10 in 31 gamges with 27 starts and posted a 3.48 ERA. He was with the team for their run to winning the 1984 World Series but didn’t pitch. The Tigers traded him to the Giants in 1985 with Bob Melvin and Scott Medvin (the player to be named later) for Eric King, Dave LaPoint, and Matt Nokes. After just one season in San Francisco he moved on to Minnesota.

He was with the Twins for their run to the World Series in his first season with them in 1987. As a reliever he went 8-1 in 47 games and also got six starts with a 3.92 ERA. He really had for great seasons in relief with them, pitching in at least 47 games each year and winning eight or nine games in each of those years as well. He closed out his playing career with a season and a half in Atlanta and a half season in Kansas City.

After baseball he work in television in Minnesota and worked for a car dealership.

Juan has a long enough name that his signature isn’t small, but he signs his name in a way that is like the style of some guys who sign on the smaller side. It always signs in about the same place, but you can see by the 1985 Topps card that he doesn’t really sign over things and tries to find a good spot for his signature.

Thanks Mr. Berenguer! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
