The Story of the Autograph

John Wathan is a former catcher in the major leagues, though he also played first base and in the outfield during his career. He spent his entire playing career, from 1976 to 1985 with the Royals and later managed the team from 1987 to 1991. He also managed the Angels in 1992.

Wathan was born in Iowa but grew up in San Diego, California. He went on to attend the University of San Diego where the Royals drafted him from in the first round of the 1971 MLB Draft with the fourth overall pick. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on May 26, 1976.

He usually played around half a season but he got contributed most in 1980, 1982 and 1983 where he played more than 120 games in those seasons. His best season was 1980 when he hit a career hit .305  with a career high six homers and another career high 58 RBI in 126 games. That helped the Royals reach the World Series where they would lose to the Phillies.

But he helped them get back in 1985. That season they defeated the Cardinals for the Championship. He would retire after that season and go right into managing in the Royals farm system. He was promoted to the Royals manager in the middle of the 1987 season and led the team to winning seasons in 1988 and 1989. They Royals fired him after a 15-22 start in 1991.

He came back to the Royals a few years later to be a broadcaster and later a scout and minor league instructor.

John has a great signature. Its nice and big and he puts a ton of ink on your card. Best of all, its blue ink and looks great with those KC uniforms. I think my favorit of these is the 1985 Topps card because they won the World Series that year.

Thanks Mr. Wathan! I’m giving this return a 8 overall.
