The Story of the Autograph
John O’Donoghue pitched in the majors from 1963 to 1971. He played for the Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers and Montreal Expos. The most time he ever spent in one place was in Kansas City and Cleveland, the latter of which he earned All-Star honors while there in 1965.
O’Donoghue is from Kansas City and was signed as an amateur by the Athletics before the 1959 season. He struggled in the minors to start out his career. But after those first three years, he somehow figured it out in 1963 and the Athletics needed some pitching help so they brought him up. He made his major league debut on September 29, 1963 on the last day of the regular season. He earned his first win in May of 1964.
He earned an All-Star appearance in 1965 but it was not a great year for him. 1967 was a much better year. It probably also saw is finest game in a win against the Tigers. In Detroit he pitched a one-hit complete game shutout against a Tigers lineup featuring Kaline, Horton, Matthews, Cash and others. The only hit was by Bill Freehan in the second inning.
The Score on John O’Donoghue – 5.5
John has a pretty big signature for a guy of that generation. A lot of guys who sign from that ERA have flat signatures. A lot of them are great but John’s definitely has some height to it. This one appears to be a little light and almost seems like it’s not a Sharpie to me. Maybe it is and the card just sucked up some of the marker.
Thanks Mr. O’Donoghue! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
