The Story of the Autograph
John “Blue Moon” Odom is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1964 to 1976 with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago White Sox.
Odom was born and raised in Macon, Georgia. While in high school he was part of a team that won two consecutive state championships and and put up a 42-2 record. He was signed by the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent in June of 1964. He made his major league debut just a few months later on September 5, 1964.
While the Athletics were in Kansas City he was up and down to the minors a bit and never really had too much success. Once they moved to Oakland he got a shot at the starting rotation and in 1968 he put up one of the best seasons of his career with a 16-10 record and a career best 2.45 ERA in 31 starts. That earned him his first of two consecutive All-Star nods.
The A’s were starting to become a force in the American League in the late 60’s and earned a spot in the ALCS in 1971 but were beat by the Orioles. Prior to the 1972 season, Odom was shot twice by a burglar at his home. Still, he had an amazing 15-6 season en route to helping the Athletics to their first of three consecutive World Series Championships from 1972 to 1974. But it didn’t come without turmoil as there was some infighting between Odom and Vida Blue.
Odom closed out his career after the A’s traded him to the Indians in 1975, then again to the Braves that same season, and then to the Indians the following season. He went to the A’s organization again in 1977 but retired before making it back to the majors.
The Score on John Odom – 6.0
“Blue Moon” has a pretty standard signature, one that you’d expect to see at the bottom of a form say. Of course, you wouldn’t expect him to have his nickname on there which makes it better. I really love the card that this is one two because it shows him pinch running and it’s a World Series card.
Thanks Mr. Odom! I’m giving this return a 6.
