The Story of the Autograph

John Evans Montague, born on September 12, 1947, in Newport News, Virginia, is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher whose career spanned parts of seven seasons from 1973 to 1980. A right-handed pitcher, Montague played for the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, and California Angels, contributing both as a starter and reliever throughout his tenure in the majors.

Montague attended Newport News High School and later played college baseball at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His potential on the mound caught the attention of MLB scouts, leading to his selection by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round of the 1965 MLB June Amateur Draft. Opting not to sign, he was later drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 3rd round of the 1967 January Draft-Secondary Phase.

Montague made his MLB debut with the Montreal Expos on September 9, 1973. Over parts of three seasons with the Expos, he appeared in 62 games, primarily as a reliever, and recorded a 3–5 win-loss record with a 3.58 ERA. In September 1975, Montague was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. He made three relief appearances for the Phillies that season.

After spending the 1976 season in the minors, Montague joined the expansion Seattle Mariners in 1977. Notably, he earned the first save in Mariners history on April 9, 1977, by pitching two scoreless innings against the California Angels. During his time with the Mariners, Montague served both as a starter and reliever. In 1977, he appeared in 47 games, starting 15, and posted an 8–12 record with a 4.29 ERA.

Montague was traded to the California Angels in August 1979. He contributed to the Angels’ bullpen during their push for the American League West title, recording six saves in 14 appearances that season. In 1980, Montague made 37 relief appearances for the Angels, finishing the season with a 4–2 record and three saves.

John did a great job on these cards. One thing you can see is that he pretty much matched his facsimile signature. I’m glad he didn’t do what some others do which is sign right over that signature and almost trace it. The 1978 Topps card is a bit better because at least that one is centered up a bit compared to the 1975 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Montague! I’m giving this return a 7.

This is my second successful return from him. To see the first return, check out my post from August 2020.
