The Story of the Autograph
John Mizerock is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played for the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves during four seasons from 1983 to 1989. He also worked as a coach and managed with the Kansas City Royals.
Mizerock is native of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He was drafted out of high school by the Astros in the 1979 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on April 12, 1983. Unfortunately just a few days later he gave up three passed balls (though they were from knuckleballer Joe Niekro) and lost his back-up catcher role and his spot in the majors. He came back to spell Alan Ashby (the starter) later in the year though. He would be up and down a lot that year.
After a whole year in the minors in 1984, he made it back to the majors in the 1985 and ’86 seasons. 1986 saw him make the most appearances in his career with 44. He was on the postseason roster that year against the Mets but never appeared in a game and was released after the season. He spent 1987 with the Expos in the minors and then moved on to the Braves. He made some appearances in 1989, spent another year in the minors with them, and then called it quits.
Mizerock went into coaching in the minors and the majors. While with the Royals in 2002 he was named their interim manager when Tony Muser was fired. He later coached for the Phillies in the majors as well.
The Score on John Mizerock – 6.0
I like John’s signature but this marker isn’t that great. It didn’t do very well on the 1987 Topps card. But check out that “M” and the “z” and that last name on that card. It looks really cool. I know the autograph came out better on the 1987 Donruss card, but the autograph style looks better on the other.
Thanks Mr. Mizerock! I’m giving this return a 6.
