The Story of the Autograph
John Halama is a former left-pitcher in the major leagues who worked as both a starter and a reliever. He played from 1998 to 2006 with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.
Halama was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He stayed in Brooklyn for college went St. Francis University. From there the Houston Astros drafted him in the 23rd round of the 1994 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with the Astros on April 2, 1998. He only played in six games that season, starting all six and going 1-1 with a 5.85 ERA. After the season the Astros traded Halama to Seattle to complete the deal that brought Randy Johnson to Houston.
He spent the most time with any team with Seattle from 1999 to 2002. He started the majority of those games and had a winning record every year with the Mariners. While he tended to have a higher ERA he put up records of 11-10, 14-9, 10-7, and 6-5.
The rest of his career he spent bouncing around and mostly worked out of the bullpen. After his time with the Orioles, the last time he appeard in the majors, he would try to make it back to the majors with the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Athletics again, but would never make it back to the bigs. He also played with a few independent minor league teams like the Long Island Ducks, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, and Lancaster Barnstormers. He would later coach with the York Revolution in the minor leagues.
The Score on John Halama – 6.5
John seems to have an undetailed and prescriptive signature. There’s not much to it, but I guess it’s also recognizable with the way he does it. I think it came out the best on the 2003 Topps card, but I like that I got so many of him in a Mariners uniform because he spent the most time and his best years there.
Thanks Mr. Halama! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
