The Story of the Autograph
John Friesz is a former quarterback in the NFL. He played from 1990 to 2000 for the San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.
Friesz was born in Montana and moved to Idaho when he was a kid. He high school won a state championship when he was a junior (when he was second string) and then was a runner up as a senior (when he was the starter). He was lightly recruited and but chose the scholarship offered by the University of Idaho, coach then by Dennis Erickson.
He became the starter in 1986, under new coach Keith Gilbertson, he would back up Scott Linehan (who would later be a coordinator and head coach in the NFL). After than Friesz was the starter for three years. He was pretty great during his three years, winning all sorts of All-Conference awards. He ultimately won the Walter Payton Award as the outstanding player in Division I-AA in his senior season. That year he threw for over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns. He would later be admitted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
The Chargers drafted him in 1990 with their sixth round pick. He was the tenth quarterback selected overall. The Chargers made him their starting quarterback in his second season. He had a rough first season as a starter and in 1992 he picked up a knee injury in the preseason. That opened the door for the Chargers to bring in Stan Humphries who would take the starting position. After than he would jump to a few other teams as a back up and finally retire after the 2000 season with the Patriots.
The Score on John Friesz – 6.5
Darn football cards always so dark and busy. John puts a good amount of ink on your card and has a good size to his autograph. Unfortunately the football images kind of get in its way and hide it a bit. As far as style, John is a little bit along the lines of a “chicken scratch” for me.
Thanks Mr. Friesz! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
