The Story of the Autograph
John Boccabella is a former catcher and first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1963 to 1974 with the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and San Francisco Giants.
Boccabella is a native of the San Francisco area in California. After high school he went to the University of Santa Clara. He helped the Broncos to the final of the 1962 College World Series where they lost to Michigan. The Cubs signed him as an amateur free agent in 1963 and he played well in their minor league system. He earned a callup by September 2 of that season.
While he started at first base, Leo Durocher decided to make him his backup catcher to Randy Hundley. In six seasons with the Cubs he would play as many as 75 games in a season once, but other than that no more than 25 games in a season. The Expos then drafted him in the expansion draft and he got a lot more time with them.
He had his best seasons in Montreal because he got more of a chance to play there. Then before he stopped playing, the Expos traded him to the Giants where he spent the 1974 season with his hometown team.
The Score on John Boccabella – 7.0
John put some good ink on these cards with that thick blue marker. It looks really good on that Expos card. It’s too bad he didn’t actually play for them in 1974 and had moved on to the Giants. He still had a 1975 card with the Giants, which is quite colorful, but he didn’t actually play that season.
Thanks Mr. Boccabella! I’m giving this return a 7.
