The Story of the Autograph
Joe Borchard is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 2002 to 2007 with the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins.
Borchard was born and raised in California. He played both baseball and football growing up and helped his high school team to the Division III State Championship as their quarterback. He went on to attend Stanford University where he played quarterback as well as outfield on the baseball team. He earned National Player of the Week honors when he subbed for the starter in a game against UCLA.
He was also a tremendous baseball player though. He was drafted twice before signing. The first was out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the twentieth round of the 1997 MLB Draft, but he chose not to sign. Then the White Sox drafted him in the first round with the twelfth overall pick of the 2000 MLB Draft. They gave him the highest signing bonus ever at the time, later broken by Justin Upton.
He made his major league debut on September 2, 2002. Unfortunately he never showed the promise in the majors. He is first two seasons saw him play just 16 games in each season and then in 2004 he played in 63. The White Sox then traded him to Seattle in 2006 for Matt Thornton. But the Mariners didn’t have him for long as the Marlins selected him off waivers a few months later.
He bounced around after the Marlins but never would play in the majors after his last appearance with Florida on August 5, 2007. While with Atlanta’s organization he was out for Tommy John surgery as well. He later played in the Atlantic League as late as 2011.
The Score on Joe Borchard – 7.5
Joe did a great job on these. The black marker looks really great and makes the signature stand out so well. It’s nice that only one of these had the black jersey to work around because it gave him some great places to sign. The thicker marker he used goes pretty well with his style of signature to boot.
Thanks Mr. Borchard! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
