The Story of the Autograph

Jimmy Waite is a former goaltender in the National Hockey League. He played for the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Phoenix Coyotes between 1988 and 1999.

Waite is a native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He was a very high rated goalie as he worked his way to the junior ranks and was chosen as the best goaltender at the 1988 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the tournaments All-Star team as Canada won the gold medal. The Blackhawks selected him in the 1987 NHL Draft. He would end up competing with Ed Belfour and Dominic Hasek.

He would ultimately spend his career as a back up and never played more than 20 games in a season, which he did in the last year of his first stint with the Blackhawks in 1992-’93. The Blackhawks traded him to San Jose after that season. But it would be less than a year before he returned into Blackhawks in another trade. In 1997 he moved on to the Coyotes via the waiver draft. He would try to stay in the NHL with the Maple Leafs in 1999 but would not make the team.

For the remainder of his career he played in Germany with the Moskitos Essen, Iserlohn Roosters, ERC Ingolstadt and Nurnmberg Ice Tigers through 2010. The days he’s the goaltending coach with the Blackhawks.

This is a great return from Jimmy. I think my favorite of the bunch is the 1991 Bowman card. I think the signature just sticks out the best on that one. This is a good example of one where I would kind of want a black marker just to go witht he team colors. But then if he used a black marker you wouldn’t see it as well.

Thanks Mr. Waite! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
