The Story of the Autograph
Jimmy Key is a former left-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1998 with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.
Key is a native of Huntsville, Alabama. After an excellent high school career he went on to Clemson University. He showed that he was not only a good pitcher but also a pretty good hitter there and was first-team All-ACC at two positions. He helped the Tigers to the 1980 College World Series and pitched in the first game. The Blue Jays drafted him in the third round of the 1982 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them on April 6, 1984.
He started out as a bullpen arm in his rookie year and had a 4-5 record with 10 saves and a 4.65 ERA. The next year and beyond he was a starter with the Blue Jays. He would post a 14-6 record with a 3.00 ERA in 35 games with 32 starts in his second season and earn his first of five All-Star nods. Over the next several years in Toronto he would have winning seasons in all but two seasons – 1989 when he would be one game under .500 and 1992 when he was was .500. He earned another All-Star appearance with the Jays in 1991, but more importantly was part of their World Series winning staff in the 1992 season.
He moved on to New York in 1993 and would have two more All-Star seasons in 1993 and 1994, with both of those years having his highest career win totals at 18 and 17 respectively. After New York he went to Balimore where he would have one more All-Star year in 1997, going 16-10 with a 3.43 ERA. He was 186-117 for his career and only had three years of records under .500, those were all only one game under and then the one .500 year.
After leaving baseball he became and amateur golfer.
The Score on Jimmy Key – 7.5
Jimmy always has had a really consistent signature. I love getting his signature on old Blue Jay cards because when he uses a blue marker it goes really well on the cards. I think my favorite of these is the 1989 card because the signature just really pops on that one.
Thanks Mr. Key! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
