The Story of the Autograph
Jim Pankovits played in the majors from 1984 through 1988 with the Houston Astros. Before ending is career he also appeared for the Red Sox in 1990. He played the majority of the time as a second baseman defensively but also appeared in the outfield and other infield positions as well.
Pankovits was born and raised in Virginia. As a boy he played for the Tuckahoe Virginia Little League team that made an appearance in the 1968 Little League World Series. They were the US Champions and finished as the LLWS runner-up. He went to college at South Carolina and as a Gamecock he helped the team get to the 1975 College World Series. The Astros drafted him in the fourth round of the 1976 MLB Draft.
He spent a long time in the minors and made his debut on May 27, 1984. He was used as a pinch hitter a lot and if he made it in defensively it was primarily at second base. He played the most during the 1985 and ’86 seasons as Bill Doran’s back up. 1986 was especially good as he appeared in 70 games and hit .283 with one homer and seven RBI. Before he moved around after the ’88 season and only made it into two more games with the Red Sox in 1990. But they were defensive appearances and he never made another plate appearance.
He went almost immediately into coaching and these days he manages the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
The Score on Jim Pankovits – 5.5
Jim has an OK autograph but that marker is not very good. Add that to the fact that those blue Astros jerseys don’t make for a great place to sign a card and it’s not the greatest. I do like the style of is autograph though and I think something that would show it off a bit better would give him a better chance at a good score.
Thanks Mr. Pankovits! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
