The Story of the Autograph
Jerry Ujdur is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He pitched mostly as a starter from 1980 to 1984 with the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians.
Ujdur was born in Hermantown, Minnesota. He would play college baseball at the University of Minnesota. While at Minnesota, Ujdur honed his skills as a pitcher, becoming one of the team’s standout players. His success in college didn’t go unnoticed, and in 1978, he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the MLB Draft.
Like many young players, Ujdur’s path to the Major Leagues was far from immediate. He spent a few years working his way through the Tigers’ minor league system, showing flashes of brilliance but also facing the challenges that come with transitioning to professional baseball. His perseverance paid off in 1980 when he finally made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on September 9.
Ujdur’s time in the Major Leagues was characterized by a mix of solid performances and struggles. His most notable season came in 1982, when he became a regular starter for the Tigers. That year, Ujdur pitched in 24 games, starting 21 of them, and compiled a respectable 3.69 ERA. He threw two complete games and recorded 71 strikeouts over 139.2 innings, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level.
However, the following season saw Ujdur’s role diminish, and by 1983, he had been moved to the bullpen and only appeared in 14 games. His ERA climbed to 5.97, and by the end of the season, his time with the Tigers was over. Ujdur briefly resurfaced with the Cleveland Indians in 1984 but only appeared in three games before his Major League career came to an end. After leaving the Major Leagues, Jerry Ujdur stepped away from professional baseball.
The Score on Jerry Ujdur – 6.0
Jerry has a signature a bit on the small side. That’s a bit accentuated on the 1981 Topps card because he is one of three players on the card. I think my favorite is the 1983 Topps card, although on both of the 1983 cards he signed the signature is over part of the image that hides the signature a bit.
Thanks Mr. Ujdur! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
