The Story of the Autograph

Jerry Tabb had a brief stint as a major league first baseman from 1976 to 1978. He played for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics during his time in the league.

Tabb was born on March 24, 1952, in Altus, Oklahoma. Growing up in Oklahoma, he showed early promise as a baseball player. His talent on the diamond earned him a spot at the University of Tulsa, where he became a standout performer for the Golden Hurricane baseball team. His time in college was highlighted by his impressive offensive numbers, which showcased his potential as a power hitter. In 1971, Tabb helped lead the Golden Hurricane to the College World Series, where they finished as the runner-up. His performances earned him All-American honors, solidifying his status as a top prospect heading into the professional ranks.

Tabb’s success at the collegiate level did not go unnoticed; he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round (16th overall) of the 1973 Major League Baseball Draft. After being drafted by the Cubs, Jerry Tabb began his professional career in the minor leagues. Like many young players, he faced the challenges of adapting to the higher level of competition and the grind of a long season. Tabb worked his way through the Cubs’ minor league system, displaying the same power and hitting ability that had made him a star in college. However, despite his potential, Tabb found it difficult to break into a Cubs lineup that was deep with talent at the time. His minor league career included stints with several teams, where he continued to hone his skills and wait for an opportunity to prove himself at the major league level.

He finally made his MLB debut on September 8, 1976, with the Chicago Cubs. His debut came after years of hard work in the minors, and he quickly made an impression by hitting a home run in just his second game. Despite this early success, Tabb’s time with the Cubs was brief, and he spent most of his time with the team as a pinch hitter or backup.

In 1977, Tabb was traded to the Oakland Athletics, where he saw more playing time. However, the A’s were going through a transitional period, and Tabb struggled to find a consistent role on the team. Over two seasons with Oakland, Tabb appeared in 63 games, primarily as a first baseman and designated hitter. He finished his MLB career with a .226 batting average, six home runs, and 20 RBI.

After his time in the majors, Jerry Tabb continued to play baseball at the professional level, including a stint in the Mexican League. Eventually, he decided to step away from playing and pursue other opportunities. Post-retirement, Tabb returned to his roots in Oklahoma, where he became involved in coaching and mentoring young athletes. His experiences in professional baseball gave him a unique perspective on the game, and he dedicated himself to helping the next generation of players develop their skills and understanding of the sport.

The Score on Jerry Tabb – 6.0

Jerry has a pretty standard signature. But he puts a good amount of ink on your cards. It’s not like he has a long name but he definitley fills the card still. The only issue I have with these is that some of the marker smudged or maybe got rubbed in envelope. I might have to try to find some other cards of his at some point to get a better attempt.

Thanks Mr. Tabb! I’m giving this return a 6.
