Jeff Lageman, born on July 18, 1967, in Fairfax, Virginia, is a former NFL defensive end who made significant contributions to both the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars during his decade-long professional football career. Beyond the field, Lageman has established himself as a respected sports commentator and radio personality.
Growing up in Virginia, Lageman showcased exceptional talent in football, which led him to play for the University of Virginia Cavaliers. As a linebacker, he was a three-year letterman and led the team in tackles during his junior and senior years, recording 89 tackles in 1987 and 117 in 1988. His outstanding performance earned him All-ACC honors and selections to the 1988 Blue-Gray Classic and the 1989 East-West Shrine Game.
Lageman entered the NFL as the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft, selected by the New York Jets. Despite initial skepticism surrounding his high selection, he quickly proved his worth. Over six seasons with the Jets, Lageman recorded 34.5 sacks and 349 combined tackles. His versatility and relentless play made him a cornerstone of the Jets’ defense during his tenure.
In 1995, Lageman joined the expansion team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. His veteran presence and leadership were invaluable to the fledgling franchise. During his time with the Jaguars, he added 12.5 sacks to his career totals, bringing his overall NFL career stats to 47 sacks over 122 games. Unfortunately, injuries led to his retirement after the 1998 season.
Following his retirement from professional play, Lageman seamlessly transitioned into broadcasting. He became a prominent sports commentator and radio personality in Jacksonville. Jeff does a great job on your cards and this return isn’t much different than his other returns. My favorite of this bunch is the 1991 Score card because it shows off the autograph really well. Something I am noticing this time around… I would compare Jeff’s signature to Chris Hammond on the baseball side. Very similar!
