The Story of the Autograph
Jack McKeon is a former manager in the major leagues. He managed in ever decade from the 70’s through the 2010’s with the Royals, Athletics, Padres, Reds and Marlins.
McKeon was born and raised in New Jersey. He went to Holy Cross, where he played baseball, as well as Seton Hall and Elon College, where he earned a BS is physical Education. He played in the minor leagues with the Senators/Twins organization to start and then more teams later, but never made the majors.
His first managerial gig was in in 1973 with the Royals. After a disappointing season in 1972, he led them to 88 wins that first year. The next year they dipped below 80 wins again in 1974, and while the Royals had a winning record in mid 1975, he was replaced by Whitey Herzog.
McKeon’s greatest accomplishments came much later however. While in Cincinnati he earned his first NL Manager of the Year award in 1999. The Reds were in a one-game playoff with the Mets that year and lost 5-0. But McKeon would be back in the playoffs in 2003 with the Marlins. He took them all the way to the World Series where they shocked the Yankees. McKeon earned his second NL Manager of the Year award for that year after he took over in May.
The Score on Jack McKeon – 5.0
Jack has a good signature but a couple of these are either smudged or bleeding. The ’89 Topps card has the smudge and the ’73 Topps card bled a little (no fault of Jack’s though). This is the first time in a while I’ve tried those old ’70’s team cards for a TTM. It’s tough to find a spot to sign without others on there but I see some guys get multiple people to sign them. That certainly makes for a busy card. I don’t think I’ll do that with these.
Thanks Mr. McKeon! I’m giving this return a 5.
