The Story of the Autograph

Ike Hilliard is a former wide receiver in the NFL. He played for twelve years from 1997 to 2008. During that time he played for the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Bucanneers.

Hilliard was born and raised in Patterson, Louisiana. He was a star player for his high school team playing quarterback, wingback and free safety. He went to play for Steve Spurrier at the University of Florida. While there his teams won three SEC championships from 1994 to 1996. He helped the Gators to win their first National Championship with a 12-1 record by beating Florida State in the 1997 Sugar Bowl. He’s since been enshrined in the University of Florida Hall of Fame.

The Giants drafted him in 1997 with the seventh overall pick in the first round. By 1998 he was regularly starting at wide receiver. He never made it to 1,000 yards receiving but came closest in 1999 when he had 996 yards and three touchdowns. He would have a career high eight touchdowns the following season. It was that season that he helped the Giants to the Super Bowl but they would lose to the Ravens.

Hilliard moved on to Tampa Bay for the 2004 season and finished his career with them. At that point he was a back-up but did start 10 games in 2007 and caught 62 balls for 722 yards. He was mostly a third down specialist in those years.

After playing he moved on to coaching. He’s coached in several places in the NFL, most recently in Pittsburgh, but in 2022 he started as the wide receivers coach at Auburn.

The Score on Ike Hilliard – 7.0

Ike was a fun guy to root for as a Giants fan. He always played like a small guy and always seemed fast or like the guy who would do whatever was needed. He played on some Giants teams that did some good things after some years that were not so fun to watch for me. I’m hoping I can find more cards of his, but this is an era of football that I wasn’t collecting during.

Thanks Mr. Hilliard! I’m giving this one a 7.
