The Story of the Autograph
Guy Hoffman is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played in six seasons from 1979 to 1988 with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers. He also played in Japan with the Orix Braves/Blue Wave from 1989 to 1991.
Hoffman was born and raised in Illinois. He stayed in state and went to Bradley University for college. He was not drafted and the White Sox signed him as an amateur free agent in July of 1978. He played really well in their minor league system, in fact he was undefeated, and the White Sox brought him up by the next year. He made his major league debut on July 4, 1979.
Unfortunately the majors were a bit different. In 24 games that year he went 0-5 with a 5.34 ERA. He got another shot the following year and turned it around with a 1-0 record and 2.63 ERA in 23 games with one of those a start. But he would be very much up and down through the rest of his time with the Sox. He was released after the 1984 season and signed with the Cubs. He stated more games in Chicago but only played with the Cubs during the 1986 season, going 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 32 games with eight starts.
The Cubs traded Hoffman to the Reds for Wade Rowdon. Cincinnati used him mostly as a starting pitcher. He started 22 games of the 36 he appeared in and went 9-10 with a 4.37 ERA in 1987. But even a pretty good year couldn’t keep him with the Reds and they released him. He moved on to the Rangers and played his final MLB game on September 21, 1988.
He went to Japan for three years and went 20-19 before retiring.
The Score on Guy Hoffman – 7.0
Guy’s signing made me think of something funny. With the personalization and the message doesn’t it look like one person wrote the top and another signed? It just made me think about how different our signatures can be from our actually writing. Mine is very different. This was a good return from Guy and I think my favorite is the 1988 Fleer card.
Thanks Mr. Hoffman! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
