The Story of the Autograph

Greg Olson, a reliable and resilient catcher, made his mark in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the late 1980s and 1990s. Known for his defensive prowess and steady presence behind the plate, Olson carved out a solid career, highlighted by an All-Star selection and a knack for working with pitchers.

Gregory William Olson was born on September 6, 1960, in Marshall, Minnesota. He attended Edina High School in Minnesota before playing college baseball at the University of Minnesota. Olson’s solid performance with the Golden Gophers helped him earn a spot in professional baseball when he was drafted by the New York Mets in the 7th round of the 1982 MLB Draft.

Olson made his MLB debut on June 27, 1989, with the Minnesota Twins. However, it was with the Atlanta Braves that he truly found his stride. Olson served as a reliable backstop for the Braves during their rise to prominence in the early 1990s. One of the highlights of Olson’s career came in 1990, when he was selected to the National League All-Star team. His work with the Braves’ pitching staff, including young stars like Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Steve Avery, helped Atlanta develop into a perennial contender.

Throughout his career, Olson played for several teams, including:

  • Minnesota Twins (1989)
  • Atlanta Braves (1990–1993)

Olson was known for his solid defense, strong game-calling skills, and his ability to handle pitching staffs with care and intelligence. Though not a major offensive force, he contributed timely hits and was well-regarded for his leadership behind the plate. He signed with the Mets for the 1994 season but was released prior to Spring Training and retired.

Greg Olson’s career may not have been filled with headline-grabbing moments, but his contributions to the teams he played for were invaluable. His All-Star selection in 1990 remains a testament to his skill and respect within the game.

In retirement, Olson has stayed connected to the sport, offering insights and guidance to aspiring players. His dedication to the game, both on and off the field, has helped cement his legacy as a trusted and steady baseball figure. Olson’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of every role on a baseball team. As a catcher, his job was often thankless, but his consistency and professionalism left a lasting impact on the teams and players he worked with.

The Score on Greg Olson – 6.5

Greg has been a pretty good signer over the years. I think he charges these days, but at just a dollar it’s very fair. This looks to be a bit of a half-and-half return. Signing over a chest protector for a catcher is not an ideal way to show off the signature. But I think my favorite of these, although not the best signature, is because of the image of the card. That 1994 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice with him on the quad is pretty great.

Thanks Mr. Olson! I’m giving this a 6.5 overall.

This is the fourth successful return I’ve received from him. To see the others, check out these links:
