The Story of the Autograph
Greg Anthony made his mark in the NBA as a tenacious point guard, known for his leadership, defense, and floor vision. Over the course of an 11-year professional career, Anthony was a key player for several teams, but his legacy extends beyond his playing days, as he transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting. From his college days at UNLV to his role as an NBA analyst, Anthony’s basketball journey has been one of resilience, growth, and versatility.
Born on November 15, 1967, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Greg Anthony grew up with a passion for basketball. He attended Rancho High School, where his talent as a guard caught the attention of college recruiters. He began his collegiate career at the University of Portland, but it was his transfer to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) that truly changed the trajectory of his basketball career.
Playing under legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian, Anthony became a key part of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, one of the most dominant teams in college basketball history. As the team’s starting point guard, Anthony was instrumental in leading the Runnin’ Rebels to the 1990 NCAA Championship, where they captured the title with a convincing victory over Duke. Known for his gritty defense, leadership, and unselfish play, Anthony embodied the team’s relentless style of play.
In his senior season (1990–1991), Anthony guided the Runnin’ Rebels to an undefeated regular season and another Final Four appearance, though the team fell short of repeating as champions. His contributions to the program earned him a reputation as one of the best floor generals in college basketball.
Anthony entered the 1991 NBA Draft and was selected 12th overall by the New York Knicks. Joining a Knicks team known for its defensive intensity, Anthony fit right in with his tough, hard-nosed playing style. As the backup point guard to Mark Jackson and later Derek Harper, Anthony became a key rotational player during the Knicks’ deep playoff runs in the mid-1990s. His time with the Knicks was defined by his defense and playmaking ability, helping the team reach the 1994 NBA Finals. Anthony’s toughness and willingness to take on challenging defensive assignments made him a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden.
After four seasons with the Knicks, Anthony moved on to play for several other teams, including the Vancouver Grizzlies, Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks. While he was never a star in the NBA, Anthony was known for his reliability, basketball IQ, and leadership on and off the court. He played a pivotal role as a veteran presence, mentoring younger players and providing stability at the point guard position. Anthony retired from professional basketball in 2002, having played in 757 NBA games and finishing his career with averages of 7.3 points, 4.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
After his retirement from the NBA, Greg Anthony quickly transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting. He became a respected basketball analyst, working for networks like ESPN, CBS, and NBA TV. His insight and knowledge of the game, combined with his ability to articulate strategies and player dynamics, made him a valued commentator during NBA and college basketball broadcasts.
In his role as an analyst for CBS, Anthony has been a prominent figure in the network’s coverage of the NCAA Tournament, bringing his experience and passion for the game to millions of viewers. His presence on television has allowed him to remain connected to the game he loves while also providing valuable insights to basketball fans around the world.
Greg Anthony’s life outside of basketball has also been marked by entrepreneurship and philanthropy. He has been involved in various business ventures and is committed to giving back to the community through charitable efforts. On the personal front, Anthony’s son, Cole Anthony, has followed in his father’s footsteps, making a name for himself as a professional basketball player. Cole was a standout player in high school and college before being drafted into the NBA in 2020 by the Orlando Magic. Greg’s influence on his son’s career is evident, as Cole continues to develop into a key player in the league.
This is my fourth successful return from him. To see the other successful returns check out these posts:
The Score on Greg Anthony – 7.5
Greg has a great signature. I think the thing I would add that you can see about both of these cards is… when you can see it. The Stadium Club card is one of the typical basketball images with a dark background and a lot going on in the image. It’s a great picture, just not to sign over. The Fleer Ultra card on the other hand is pretty awesome!
Thanks Mr. Anthony! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
