The Story of the Autograph

Gorman Thomas is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1986. During that time he played primarily for the Milwaukee Brewers (twice), but later in his career also played for the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners.

Thomas is a native South Carolinian. He grew up in Charleston for the most part. In his junior year he changed high schools and won a state championship in basketball and then was back in Charleston for his senior year. He lettered in baseball, football, basketball and track. The Seattle Pilots drafted him out of high school with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 1969 MLB Draft.

Before he made the majors in 1973, debuting on April 6, 1973, Seattle moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers. He played 60 games in that first year and was a bench player in the first few years. He was in the minors for all of 1977 and then oddly was traded to the Rangers, only to be sold back to the Brewers before the 1978 season in a friendship deal between the two teams as Milwaukee juggled its roster. Thomas became the every day centerfielder as of 1978.

He had some really great years between 1978 and 1983, hitting between 22-25 homers (including leading the league and majors, with 65-123 RBI, with a batting average around .245. He earned an All-Star nod, the only one of his career, in the 1981 season.

He was traded to the Mariners in the middle of the 1983 season in a deal that also sent Ernie Camacho and Jamie Easterly to the Indians in exchange for Rick Manning and Rick Waits. By the end of the calendar year he was traded to the Mariners with Jack Perconte for Tony Bernazard. Two years later he was released by the Mariners in mid-season and finished his career with the Brewers.

After his playing days were over he collected art and considered opening a gallery but also loved playing golf and hunting.

The Score on Gorman Thomas – 6.5

I love a good “G” in a signature and Gorman certainly doesn’t disappoint. Some of these the marker is a bit light but the 1980 Topps and the 1983 Topps really stick out as looking the best to me. One thing that disappointed me was how little good cards I had to send him. You can see some of these are terribly miscut.

Thanks Mr. Thomas! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
