The Story of the Autograph

Glenallen Hill is a former major league outfielder and current minor league manager. He played from 1989 through 2001 with the Blue Jays, Indians, Cubs (twice), Giants, Mariners, Yankees and Angels. He’s been involved in coaching since 2003.

Hill was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. The Toronto Blue Jays drafted him out of high school in the ninth round of the 1983 MLB Draft. He made his debut for the Blue Jays six years later on July 31, 1989. He never really spent that long with any given team. Most times he was in a city for two to three years before moving on as a free agent or being traded.

Two of his best three statistical seasons he put together playing in two different cities. In 1998 he played for the Mariners and Cubs annd in 2000 he played for the Cubs and Yankees. Here’s what he did those years, I think both times playing a little better in the second city.

  • 1998: .310 average, 20 homers, 56 RBI, 122 games
  • 2000: .293 average, 27 homers (a career high), 55 RBI, 104 games

In 2000 he was part of the Yankees World Championship that year, but he only had 1 hit in 18 plate appearances throughout the postseason.

Glenallen has one of those kind of “signatures on a line” style autographs. There are plenty of others like this. Sometimes they use something on the card to do it, sometimes they have an imaginary line… you can see that Glenallen has a certain angle in mind when he signs all his cards. The card I like best is the 1990 Score because you can see the signature best.

Thanks Mr. Hill! I’m giving this return a 6.
