The Story of the Autograph
Gerald Anthony Young, born on October 22, 1964, in Tela, Honduras, is a former professional baseball outfielder recognized as the first Honduran-born player to reach Major League Baseball (MLB). His journey from Central America to the major leagues is a testament to his dedication and skill.
Young moved to the United States during his youth and attended Santa Ana Valley High School in California. His exceptional performance on the baseball field led to his selection by the New York Mets in the fifth round of the 1982 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Young began his professional career in the Mets’ minor league system. In September 1984, he was traded to the Houston Astros, where he would make his MLB debut on July 8, 1987. During his rookie season, Young showcased his potential by maintaining a batting average of .321 and an on-base percentage of .380 over 71 games. He also recorded 26 stolen bases, highlighting his speed on the field.
The 1988 season marked a significant milestone for Young, as he stole 65 bases, setting a single-season record for the Astros—a record that still stands. Despite his base-stealing prowess, he also led the National League in times caught stealing that year, with 27.
Young continued with the Astros until 1992. He then joined the Colorado Rockies in 1993, appearing in 19 games during their inaugural season. The following year, he played 16 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. Over his MLB career, Young achieved a batting average of .246, accumulated 446 hits, and stole 155 bases.
Beyond his statistics, Gerald Young’s legacy is cemented as a trailblazer for Honduran athletes in baseball. His journey from Honduras to MLB paved the way for future players from the region, demonstrating that talent and perseverance can overcome geographical and cultural barriers.

Gerald definitely has one of my favorite autographs out there. First, I love how it’s big on the ends in a way that makes it look sort of symmetrical in shape with the way those letters work together. I also love how he puts his number inside one of his loops. Lastly he is really consistent and put a good-sized signature on the cards. Definitely a favorite and most times he’s a pretty quick return.
