The Story of the Autograph

Gary Nolan is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He was a started from 1967 to 1977 primarily with the Cincinnati Reds, but played his final half season with the California Angels.

Nolan is a California native. He was drafted out of high school by the Reds in the first round of the 1966 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut the following season on April 15, 1967. He was just 18 at the time, but he had an amazing start to his career by striking out the side in the first inning of a 7-3 win over the Astros. He had a great rookie year, going 14-8 with a 2.58 ERA and finishing among the top three in Rookie of the Year voting.

From 1970 to 1972 he won at least 12 games each year including winning 18 games in 1970 and 15 games in 1972. In 1972 he made his one and only All-Star game and even earned Cy Young votes for the second time in his career. In 1973 he missed most of the year due to injury and then missed the entire 1974 season.

He came back in 1975 and put up two consecutive 15-9 seasons. Both of those efforts helped the Reds to winning two consecutive World Series in 1975 and 1976. In 1977 his arm and shoulder problems returned and he would opt to retire.

After retiring he worked as a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas and then as a host in a casino. He moved back to his hometown in 2003 and worked with high school pitchers and various charities.

The Score on Gary Nolan – 7.0

Gary has a standard signature style-wise but it really game out great on these cards. I’d like to find some cards of his that don’t represent seasons where he was injured though. These are nice cards, but he didn’t play in 1974 and then was traded and ended up retiring in 1977.

Thanks Mr. Nolan! I’m giving this return a 7.
