The Story of the Autograph

Gary Neibauer’s journey through Major League Baseball (MLB) is a testament to determination, adaptability, and a deep commitment to the sport and its players. From his early days in Montana to his advocacy for former players, Neibauer’s story offers insights into the life of a dedicated athlete and advocate.

Born on October 29, 1944, in Billings, Montana, Gary Wayne Neibauer showcased athletic prowess early on. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. His performance on the mound caught the attention of MLB scouts, leading to his selection by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 1966 MLB Draft.

Neibauer made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves on April 12, 1969. Over five seasons, he played for both the Braves (in two stints) and the Philadelphia Phillies, appearing in 75 games primarily as a relief pitcher. His career statistics include a 4–8 win-loss record, a 4.78 ERA, and 81 strikeouts over 148.2 innings pitched.

One notable moment in his career was pitching an inning of relief during Game 2 of the 1969 National League Championship Series against the New York Mets, where he allowed no hits or runs.

After retiring from professional baseball, Neibauer transitioned into a career as a mortgage broker. However, his connection to baseball remained strong. He became actively involved with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, advocating for improved pension benefits for former players who had short MLB careers and were previously ineligible for pensions.

Gary Neibauer’s legacy extends beyond his time on the mound. His dedication to supporting fellow players and ensuring they receive deserved recognition and benefits highlights his enduring impact on the baseball community.

Gary has a nice signature, but sorry, the ball point pen is not going to help here. His signature I would say is on the fun side with the circle instead of the dot on the “i” and his fun capital letters. I just which he would sign with a marker. I think my favorite of these would be the 1972 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Neibauer! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.

This is my second return from him. To see the first return, check out my post from June 2022.
