The Story of the Autograph
Gary Lavelle is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1987 with the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Oakland Athletics.
Lavelle is a native of eastern Pennsylvania. He went to high school in Bethlehem and was drafted from there by the Giants in the 20th round of the 1967 MLB Draft. He would make his debut several years later on September 10, 1974.
He worked almost entirely as a relief pitcher during his time in the majors aside from three lifetime starts. But even as a relief pitcher he put up some crazy records like 10-6, 13-10 and 10-7 which all sound like a lot for a someone in that role. He made two All-Star teams, both while a Giant, in 1977 and 1983. His career numbers and an 80-77 record with a 2.93 ERA with 136 saves in 745 games and 1085 innings pitched.
These days he lives in the Tidewater area of Virginia and coaches at Bryan & Stratton College after coaching at Greenbriar Christian Academy for years.
The Score on Gary Lavelle – 7.0
“Gs” have to be one of the better letters to see in a signature. I think Gary has one of the best. I would say that my favorite example of it is on the 1984 Topps card where you can get a really good look at it. This is a really solid return overall though.
Thanks Mr. Lavelle! I’m giving this return a 7.
