The Story of the Autograph
Gary Fencik is a former defensive back in the NFL. He played for the Chicago Bears from 1976 to 1987.
Fencik is a native of Illinois. He went to Yale where he played wide receiver, but he was regarded as two slow to play that position in the pros. He was drafted by the Dolphins in the tenth round of the 1976 NFL Draft and they were converting him into a defensive back. He ruptured his lung in the preseason and the Dolphins released him. He headed back to his home in Chicago.
While preparing for a banking career, the Bears offered him a job. He would go on to captain some great defensive teams. He was a two-time Pro Bowler in 1980 and 1981, earned a First-team All-Pro nod in 1981 and a second-team nod in 1985. He was also part of the Super Bowl shuffling winners of 1985. His career year was probably 1981 when he had a career high tying six interceptions with 121 return yards, a touchdown and one fumble recovery.
After his playing days he earned his MBA from Northwestern and went into Finance. He also worked as a commentator in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
The Score on Gary Fencik – 8.0
Gary has a pretty fancy signature. I’m sure that’s more of the finance guy in him coming out over the football player. I love his inscriptions though. “Go Bears” was a nice touch and it’s always nice to get a little thing like a Super Bowl number on there.
Thanks Mr. Fencik! I’m giving this return an 8.
