The Story of the Autograph

Gary Allenson is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1979 to 1985 he played for the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays.

Allenson was born and raised in Southern California. He played baseball for the Sun Devils of Arizona State University and was then chosen by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 1976 MLB Draft. He had a pretty successful minor league career that included being named the International League MVP. He made his major league debut on April 8, 1979 to fill in for an injured Carlton Fisk. He would soon be the Sox number one catcher when Fisk left as a free agent a couple years later.

He got into 108 games in his first year but never topped that again. He would play more than half the season in 1982 and 1983 but really never came on. His best season with the most playing time was 1982 when he played in 92 games and topped 300 plate appearances. He hit .205 with six homers and 33 RBI (those last stats were career highs). His playing time faded and he moved on to the Blue Jays for the final year of his career in the majors.

In 1987 he started managing in the minors for the Yankees farm system. He moved into the Red Sox system and ended up working his way through the ranks to become a coach on the major league team. He later worked in the Rangers, Astros, Brewers, Marlins, and Orioles systems.

The Score on Gary Allenson – 6.5

Gary definitely has a bit of a quirk with his “G.” His marker doesn’t touch the card the whole time. That makes it a little hit hard to tell what he is going for. The same thing seems to happen while writing his last name too. I think the best card, with the least skips is the 1981 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Allenson! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
