The Story of the Autograph
Freeman McNeil is a former running back in the NFL. His career spanned from 1981 to 1992 and he spent the entire time with the New York Jets.
McNeil was born in Mississippi but grew up in Los Angeles, California when his family relocated there. His team won the city title in high school and he went on to attend UCLA. He was a two-time All-Pac 10 selection for the Bruins. He total 3,195 yards and 21 touchdowns. That was enough for the Jets to want to take him with the third overall pick in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft.
He saw a lot of success as a Jet, leading the league in rushing in 1982 (the first Jet to do so) and he was the franchise leader in rushing until Curtis Martin eclipsed him later. His best two seasons were 1984 and 1985 when he topped 1,000 yards for the season including 1,331 in 1985. He made the the Pro Bowl three times (1982, 1984, 1985) and was also First-Team All-Pro once (1982), and Second-Team All-Pro once (1985).
From 1990 to 1992 he was the lead plaintiff in the case that struck down the NFL’s Plan B free agency system. While it was a major step in the achievement of free agency for the NFL Players Association, McNeil wasn’t awarded damages.
The Score on Freeman McNeil – 6.5
While I am a Giants fan, this was is kind of special to me. My mom kind of rooted for the Jets and I always thought that Freeman was her favorite player on the team. I think she had a few guys she rooted for specifically but Freeman was definitely one of them. When I saw some other folks getting him back I was really excited to make an attempt. This came out pretty well.
Thanks Mr. McNeil! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
