The Story of the Autograph
Fred Breining is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He worked mostly as a reliever from 1980 to 1984 with the San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos.
Breining was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He went to the College of San Mateo where he was drafted by the Pirates in the third round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He would never appear for the Pirates in the majors though. Before he made his debut he was traded to the Giants with Al Holland and Ed Whitson in the deal that brought Bill Madlock, Lenny Randle and Dave Roberts to the Pirates. That deal was in the middle of the 1979 season and he would make his debut the next year on September 4, 1980.
He would pitched in relief for the first three seasons of his career. He built up to having 54 appearances in 1982 with an 11-6 record and 3.08. The next season the Giants would make him a starter and in 32 games (all starts) he went 11-12 with a 3.82 ERA.
Before the 1984 season he was traded with Max Venable, and later Andy McGaffigan, to the Expos for Al Oliver. Unfortunately things wouldn’t go well in Montreal. He pitched in four games and in what would be his final game he blew out his shoulder. He wasn’t even making a pitch at the time, he was trying to throw to first after a bunt.
After his career he worked as an instructor with the Dusty Baker International Baseball Academy and gave private lessons in Sacramento with Lloyd Moseby.
The Score on Fred Breining – 7.0
Fred has a good signature. It has some pretty good size but a lot of these cards didn’t give him a great place to sign. I think the 1984 Topps card is the best because it has a natural place to sign. After knowing Fred’s story a bit more, it’s a little awkward that he has 1985 cards because he didn’t play after 1984 because of his injury.
Thanks Mr. Breining! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
