Frank Michael DiPino, born on October 22, 1956, in Syracuse, New York, is a former professional baseball pitcher whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned over a decade. Known for his effective left-handed pitching, DiPino made significant contributions to several teams and left an indelible mark on the game.

Growing up in Camillus, New York, DiPino honed his baseball skills from a young age. He attended West Genesee High School in Camillus before playing collegiate baseball at Saint Leo University in Florida. In 1977, DiPino’s professional journey began when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Milwaukee Brewers.

DiPino made his MLB debut with the Brewers on September 13, 1981. Shortly thereafter, he was traded to the Houston Astros, where he emerged as a reliable relief pitcher. In the 1983 season, he led the Astros with 20 saves, a feat he repeated in 1984 with 14 saves. On September 7, 1982, DiPino recorded his first major league victory, striking out ten batters in five innings – a testament to his pitching prowess.

In July 1986, DiPino was traded to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for veteran infielder Davey Lopes. During his tenure with the Cubs, he became part of baseball history by securing the win in the first official night game at Wrigley Field on August 9, 1988.

Following his stint with the Cubs, DiPino played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1989 to 1992. In his inaugural season with the Cardinals, he achieved nine consecutive wins and maintained an impressive 2.45 ERA. He concluded his MLB career with the Kansas City Royals in 1993. Over his 12-season career, DiPino amassed a win-loss record of 35-38, an ERA of 3.83, 515 strikeouts, and 56 saves across 514 games.

After retiring from professional baseball, DiPino returned to his roots in Central New York. As of 2013, he served as a pitching instructor for Perfect Practice, a training facility in Syracuse, imparting his knowledge and experience to aspiring pitchers. Reflecting on his career, DiPino expressed pride in his accomplishments and gratitude for the unwavering support from his hometown community.

Frank is one of the best signers in the TTM game. He not only puts some interesting ink on your cards, he returns things pretty quickly in the grand scheme of returns. I always think that his name looks like he’s writing something a little different than Frank… but it ends with an “F” and a “k”.
