The Story of the Autograph
Eric Soderholm is a former third baseman in the major leagues. He played with the Twin, White Sox, Rangers and Yankees from 1971 through 1980.
Soderholm was born in New York but went to high school in Florida. He went to South Georgia College and was drafted twice before signing. First he was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in 1967 and then he was drafted by the Twins in the first round of the 1968 MLB Draft. He would debut with the Twins three years later on September 3, 1971.
It was 1974 when Soderholm won the starting position at third base for the Twins. He had two solid seasons and then a knee injury nearly derailed his career. He missed the entire 1976 season because of it. But the White Sox took a chance on him in 1977 and benefited from Soderholm having a Comeback Player of the Year season. He had a career year by batting .280 with 25 home runs and 67 RBI.
Soderholm would follow up that great year with another 20 homer an 67 RBI year in 1978. But in 1979 Soderholm was dealt to the Rangers in exchange for Ed Farmer. He stayed through the end of that season and was dealt again to the Yankees.
Unfortunately he wouldn’t make it back to the majors after the 1980 season. He had been through too many surgeries on his knees to continue. After retiring he was hired as a scout and also started youth baseball camps and became a private hitting instructor.
The Score on Eric Soderholm – 7.5
Eric has a sort of flat signature but he sure does squeeze a lot on to the cards. My favorite of these cards is the 1976 Topps card. Given that he didn’t actually play in 1976 because of injury, that always makes me think, which cards are better to have for a player. I think you’d rather have the 1977 card which was his best season.
Thanks Mr. Soderholm! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
