The Story of the Autograph

Don Stanhouse is a former right-handed pitcher who worked as both a starter and a reliver during his time in the majors. He played from 1972 to 1982 with the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles (twice) and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Stanhouse was born and raised in DuQuoin, Illinois. He was drafted out of high school with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 1969 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. However, before he could make his debut with them he was traded to the Texas Rangers with Jim Panther for Denny McLain. He made his major league debut with them on April 19, 1972.

After he was traded to the Expos with Pete Mackanin for Willie Davis, he worked a lot more as a starter than he had with the Rangers. He still worked a lot in relief but started more than he had in the past. He was then moved to the Orioles with Joe Kerrigan and Gary Roenicke for Rudy May, Randy Miller and Bryn Smith.

He played some of his best years with the O’s and Jim Palmer said that in 1978 he was the Orioles’ best relief pitcher. He saved more than 20 games a year in the two years he spent him Baltimore, was an All-Star in 1979, and helped them to a World Series that year. Unfortunately they would fall to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He earned a couple of interesting nicknames while in Baltimore. He was quirky for his pre-game antics and hairstyle and was dubbed “Stan the Man Unusual” a play on Stan Musial and his nickname. He also had a penchant for walking batters on purpose as part of his strategy if he didn’t want to face him. That got Earl Weaver going and Weaver nicknamed him Fullpack because of how much he would smoke while watching him.

Don fills up the card pretty well which is appreciated. I’m really happy that I had an Orioles card of his, but especially for 1979 given he was an All-Star that year and they went to the World Series. I’m hoping I can find some more cards of his though because I think his signature could look really good on some of his other cards.

Thanks Mr. Stanhouse! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
