The Story of the Autograph
Don Kessinger played as a shortstop in the major leagues from 1964 through 1979. He spent the vast majority of his time with the Cubs and played shortstop for the vast majority of the time he was there. In 1976 he moved on to the Cardinals and played all around the infield and did the same when he moved to the White Sox in 1977.
Kessinger grew up in Arkansas and went to college at Ole Miss. He played basketball and baseball there and earned All-Conference, All-SEC and All-America honors. The Cubs signed him as an amateur free agent in June of 1964 and he made his major league debut by September of the same year. He was the starting shortstop by June of the next year.
By 1968 Kessinger had really improved his hitting and he became an All-Star and Gold Glover. He was an All-Star every year from 1968 through 1972 and then again in 1974. He earned Gold Glove honors in 1969 and 1970 and also registered MVP votes those years as well.
Kessinger was a player-manager for the White Sox in 1979 and was there for the infamous “Disco Demolition Night” at Comiskey. But with the White Sox not doing so well he was replaced in August by Tony La Russa.
The Score on Don Kessinger – 7.0
I like Don’s autograph a lot and I really wish I had a few more cards of his. My knocks on his autograph are that it could be bigger and isn’t centered. But I’m being a bit picky with that last one. It’s a nice and clean autograph with a good bright marker.
Thanks Mr. Kessinger! I’m giving this one a 7.
