The Story of the Autograph
Don Aase is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He worked as a starting pitcher in the beginning of his career and a relief pitcher from the middle to the end of his career. He pitched from 1977 to 1990 with the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Mets, and Dodgers.
Aase was drafted by the Red Sox in 1972. He spent several years in the minors and struggled to start but bounced back. He made his debut for the Red Sox in July of 1977 and threw two shutouts en route to a 6-2 rookie year in 13 starts with a 3.12 ERA.
The Red Sox traded Aase the Angels after his first season. He was with the Angels on their first trip to the postseason and earned the first postseason win in Angels history when he won Game three of the 1979 ALCS as he came on in relief of Frank Tanana. He came in with the lead, blew it, and stuck around for the win.
He moved to the bullpen with the Angels and then eventually signed as a free agent with the Orioles for the 1985 season. He made his first All-Star game in 1986 when he saved 23 games in the first half of the year and 34 for the whole season. That broke a franchise record later topped by Gregg Olson.
He played a season each for the Mets and Dodgers before retiring.
The Score on Don Aase – 6.5
There’s not that many letters to Don’s name so it makes for a simple signature. He definitely highlights the “A” in his last name. It’s pretty literally the centerpiece to his signature. He used a great marker and is always pretty consistent.
Thanks Mr. Aase! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
