The Story of the Autograph

Denny Hocking was a utility player in the majors over a 13 year career from 1993 trough 2005. The vast majority of his career (1993-2003) was spent with the Minnesota Twins, but he also spent a year each with the Rockies and Royals to end his career. He played all over the place and was never a starter at any one position with 100 games played at shortstop, second base, third base, and right field. The only positions he never played in his career were pitcher and catcher.

Denny grew up in California and was drafted by the Twins in the 52nd round of the 1989 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 10, 1993. In his first few years in the majors he played sparingly with 15 or less games in his first three years and 49 in his fourth year. As of 1997 he was in the majors and playing all over the diamond.

His two best years were probably 1999 and 2000:

  • 1999: 136 games, .267, 7 HR, 41 RBI, 11 SB
  • 2000:  134 games, .298, 4 HR, 47 RBI, 7 SB

I’ll give the edge to 2000 because he did it while playing ten or more games at seven different positions. Plus that’s the year his Twins were born.

In 2002 when the Twins won the ALDS against the A’s, Hocking broke his hand celebrating. That must have been some celebration. He caught the final out and players piled on top of him. Someone stepped on his middle finger on his right hand and split the nail in two places. Unfortunately Hocking was out for the ALDS

After baseball Hocking has worked in the broadcast both and more recently has been a manager/coach in the majors and minors. These days he’s the manager of the Clinton Lumberkings.

The Score on Denny Hocking – 7.0

Denny has a really cool signature. My problem is that this might be my only double of his that I have. He played during some years that I was collecting at all and since I only really send out doubles, it’s slim pickin’s. But his signature is really cool and very loopy.

Thanks Mr. Hocking! I’m giving this card a 7.
