The Story of the Autograph
Del Harris is a former head coach in the NBA. He coached for the Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers. He also was an assistant coach for some ABA teams, teams internationally (Puerto Rico and Spain), and the NBA. In more recent years he’s coach and been an executive witht he Texas Legends of the G League, an affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks.
Harris is a native of Indiana. He went to Milligan College where he got a degree in religious studies. He later earned a master’s degree in history from Indiana University. He started coaching at the Junior High School level. He roase through the different ranks in Indiana at high school and started coaching professionally in Puerto Rico and then in Spain.
He got his first shot in the U.S. in the ABA with the Utah Stars as an assistant. He moved on to the Rockets in the NBA and earned the head coaching job in 1979. He would lead the Rockets to the finals in 1981 where they lost to the Celtics. He moved on to the Bucks under Don Nelsen and would eventually take over head coaching duties there in 1987.
His next major stop was with the Lakers as the head coach in 1994. He earned NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1994-’95. He was also with the Lakers as they picked up Shaq and Kobe. He would eventually be fired after a 6-6 start at the beginning of the lockout shortened 1998-’99 season. After than he had a few stops as an assistant.

Del appears to be a sideways signer. Never my favorite, but usually as long as they come out well that’s not generally a problem for me. I think the marker let’s him down on two of these just a little bit. These cards make me think about the difference between coach and manager cards in the MLB, NFL, and NBA. With the uniforms on coaches in MLB it feels a little more worth of a card. Less likely when there’s a guys in a suit.
