The Story of the Autograph
David Murphy is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 2006 to 2015 with the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels.
Murphy is a native of Texas and was born and raised in the Houston area. He helped his high school team to a state title playing as a pitcher and an outfielder, earning All-State and All-America Honorable Mentions along the way. He went on to attend Baylor University. He was first drafted while in high school by the Angels (called the Anaheim Angels at the time) in the 50th round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He didn’t sign until after playing in college when the Red Sox took him with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2003 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on September 2, 2006.
He only played 23 games for the Red Sox over the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Boston traded him to the Rangers in the middle of the 2007 season with two other players in exchange for Eric Gagne. He would be come a regular for the Rangers by the 2008 season and go on to spend the next seven seasons in Texas. Murphy was part of some good Rangers team that were great in the playoffs but lost two World Series. He had some of his best years during that time:
- 2010: .291 average, 12 homers, 65 RBI, 2.6 WAR
- 2012: .305 average, 15 homers, 61 RBI, 3.5 WAR
Murphy signed with the Indians after the 2013 season and played there until being traded to the Angels where he played the final games of his MLB career. He tried to catch on with the Red Sox and Twins before finally calling it quits in 2016. In recent years he’s worked as a broadcaster for the Rangers and Frisco RoughRiders in the minor leagues.
The Score on David Murphy – 6.5
David has a great looper signature. When it comes out well on the cards it’s definitely a fun signature. I like the Rangers cards the best because he was a Ranger for so long. My favorite is the Gypsy Queen card. It’s actually kind of crazy that two of these cards are catches at the wall in front of a video board. What are the odds? There are a couple smudges on these which are hard to see.
Thanks Mr. Murphy! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
