The Story of the Autograph

Dave Righetti pitched in the major leagues from 1979 through 1995. He spent most of his career with the Yankees.  Then after a few years with the Giants he moved to Oakland, Toronto and Chicago. He started out as a starter in his first few years, then worked as a closer and middle relief in his last few years.

Righetti was born and raised in the area of San Jose, CA. He went to high school there as well as junior college. While at San Jose City College he was named the junior college player of the year. He was drafted by the Rangers in 1977 with the 10th overall pick of the draft. He pitched in the minors for the Rangers and was traded to the Yankees in 1978. He was almost traded again in 1979 to the Twins but the deal never went through. Righetti made his major league debut with the Yankees in September of 1979 and started three games.

In a 1980 seasons in the minors while struggling with control, Righetti started 1981 in the minors. But he was up in the bigs by May and would go 8-4 for the year with a 2.05 ERA in 15 starts. That was good enough for Rookie of the Year honors in the AL. After two more years as a starter with two winning seasons, including a no-hitter in ’83, the Yankees converted Dave to a closer. He took to the role well and became an All-Star in 1986 and ’87 and led the league in saves in 1986 with 46.

He went on to be a coach and would help the Giants to three World Championships as their pitching coach.

I’m not sure if I had ever noticed the heart in Dave’s signature. If I had I’d forgotten about it. I don’t know if that is planned somehow or if that’s just how it comes out. No matter what I like it. I do have better signatures from Dave though. These just don’t seem as smooth and in the other’s I have all of the cards just fit a signature much better (better than that ’89 card definitely).

Thanks Mr. Righetti! I’m giving this return a 5.
