The Story of the Autograph
Dave Hostetler is a former major league first baseman and designated hitter. He played in the majors from 1981 to 1984 and then again in 1988 after some time in Japan. He played for the Expos, Rangers and Pirates.
Hostetler was originally drafted by the Giants in 1975 and 1976 but didn’t sign and stayed in junior college. He again didn’t sign when the Indians drafted him in 1976 either. And then again, in 1977 the Giants tried again and he didn’t sign. He had moved on to USC and was a key contributor on their 1978 College World Series team. Then in 1978 he was drafted by the Expos and signed. He would spend a few years in the minors and debut on September 15, 1981.
The Expos traded him prior to the 1982 season with Larry Parrish to obtain Al Oliver from the Rangers. He hit 22 homers in that first season with the Rangers but with only a .232 average. Unfortunately that would be his highest average when he got significant time in. He would be replaced by rookie Pete O’Brien in 1983 and he wouldn’t be a DH much more after that either.
The Rangers traded him back to the Expos after the ’84 season and he would move to the Cubs the next spring but never played for them. He instead went to Japan and played pretty well there. He tried a comeback in the states with the Pirates but only got in to six games.
Later on Dave worked for Riddell as their National Coordinator of Baseball Sales.
The Score on Dave Hostetler – 7.0
I think Dave has a really fun and vibrant signature. It’s pretty big and he really fills up the card. The best one is not on one of my cards though. Those are a bit too busy. The black & white Rangers card he sent back really is the best one.
Thanks Mr. Hostetler! I’m giving this return a 7.
