The Story of the Autograph
Darren Holmes is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1990 to 2003 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.
Holmes was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. In addition to baseball he played football and basketball in high school. The Dodgers drafted him out of high school in the 16th round of the 1984 MLB Draft. He decided to sign instead of going to the University of North Carolina. After a long stint in the minors he made his major league debut on September 1, 1990.
Like your typical reliever, Holmes bounced around to a lot of team. The Dodgers dealt him to the Brewers after than first season and then he moved on to the Rockies in the Expansion Draft. But he stayed with the Rockies for five years, by far the longest stint with any team he played with. While with them he went through three seasons where he had a lot of decisions for a reliever going 6-1, 5-4, and 9-2 from 1995 to 1997. His best year was 1995 when he put up a 2.9 WAR.
After his time with the Rockies he moved around to six other teams. Before his last years with the Braves he was out of baseball but came back to go to the post season with them. Since 2015 Holmes has been a coach and he currently works for the Baltimore Orioles.
The Score on Darren Holmes – 6.0
I was really happy to get this one back from Darren because I’m really trying to bump up the volume of my collection as it relates to “expansion” era teams. I sent this one during Spring Training this year and with all that happened I did not expect to get it back so that was a nice surprise too.
Thanks Mr. Holmes! I’m giving this return a 6.
