The Story of the Autograph
Darrell Evans is a former corner infielder in the major leagues playing mostly third base to start his career and then more first base in the later stages. He played from 1969 to 1989 with the Atlanta Braves (twice), San Francisco Giants, and Detroit Tigers.
Evans is a native Californian. He was drafted several times before signing with a team. The first was out of high school by the Chicago Cubs in the 13th round of the 1965 MLB Draft. He instead went to Pasadena City College and was then drafted by the Yankees (second round, 1966), Tigers (fifth round, 1966), Phillies (third round, 1967), and then finally by Kansas City Athletics in the seventh round of the 1967 MLB June Draft-Secondary Phase. He would make it to the majors with the Athletics though. In December of 1968 the Braves chose him in the 1968 rule 5 draft and he made his first appearance with them on April 20, 1969.
Overall Evans had two pretty super years and then several really good years in the majors. In 1973 and ’74 he put up a 9 and 7.2 war respectively. It earned him his first All-Star appearance in 1973. Both of those years he led the league in walks and in 1973 he hit his career high in homers with 41 in addition to driving in over 100 and hitting a career high .281. Later in his career he was a member of the 1984 World Champion Tigers team. He earned his second All-Star appearance the year before and he led the league in homers with 40 in 1985.
After his playing days were over he went on to coach with the Yankees and then as a minor league instructor. He would also manage teams in the independent Golden Baseball League.
The Score on Darrell Evans – 6.5
I really had a hard time picking cards I wanted Darrell to sign. I felt like I had a lot of them but I think what I tried to make my first priority was to get him signing a card of him with every team he played for. I think in doing so I didn’t necessarily pick the best cards to show off his signature though. I think the best of these might be the 1979 Topps card.
Thanks Mr. Evans! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
