The Story of the Autograph
Dan Warthen is a former left-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1975 to 1978 with the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and Houston Astros.
Warthen was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. He played football in high school in addition to baseball and was All-American in football. The Montreal Expos drafted him out of high school in the second round of the 1971 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors he made his first major league appearance for them on May 18, 1975.
He played during three seasons with the Expos and was mostly a starter during that time, although he did get a lot of time as a reliever as well. In his first year in the league he made 40 appearances with 18 of them being starts. His first year he went 8-10 with a 3.11 ERA, but he only won four more games in his career after that. In 1977 the Expos traded him with Barry Foote to the Phillies in Exchange for Tim Blackwell and Wayne Twitchell. The Phillies would then trade him to the Astros in 1978 and they would release him in Spring Training of 1979.
Dan may be better known though as a pitching coach. He’s spent time as a coach since the 80’s with seven different teams. The most significant time was spent with the Mets from 2008 to 2017 and most recently he’s been with the Rangers.
The Score on Dan Warthen – 5.0
Dan looks like he signed these with two different markers. I’m not quite sure why but it looks like he maybe started with the thinner marker on the 1977 card and then changed to a thicker marker on the 1976 card. You can kind of see that he attempted to sign the 1976 card with the thinner one first. Unfortunately that little false start makes that one a bit awkward.
Thanks Mr. Warthen! I’m giving this return a 5 overall.
