The Story of the Autograph

Colby Lewis was a starting pitcher in the majors from 2002 through 2016. He didn’t pitch every year due to injury and pitching over in Japan. While In the majors he started and ended his career with the Rangers but he also spent a little time in Detroit and Oakland.

The Rangers drafted Lewis in 1999 in the first round of the draft. He debuted in April of 2002 and was a highly touted prospect. Those first few years were a challenge for him though. In 2004 he suffered a rotator cuff injury and spent all of the year in rehab after surgery. The Tigers claimed him off waivers and he pitched in two games for them in 2006 and was eligible to pitch in the postseason that year, but the Tigers lost to the Cardinals. He would move on to the Nationals (who released him before he would appear for them) and then the A’s who gave him a shot in the minors to start. He pitched a few games, was claimed off waivers by the Royals and then moved on to Japan.

He was great in a couple years in Japan. In led the league in strikeouts both years he was there but really wanted to get back to the majors. The Rangers gave him another shot and this time he really had some great years. He was a big part of their teams that made it to the World Series in back to back years in 2010 and 2011 (losing both times). His best year might have been 2015 when he went 17-9 with a 4.66 ERA and 142 K’s. These days he works in the Rangers front office.

I’m digging Colby’s signature. He’s kind of got some loops were you wouldn’t expect some loops in some way. It’s a pretty good sized autograph and it came out really well on these cards. I especially like the Gypsy Queen even though that one is a pretty busy image.

Thanks Mr. Lewis! I’m giving these a 7.
