The Story of the Autograph
Charlie Puleo played eight seasons over nine years in the majors. He was a both a starting and relief pitcher from 1981 throught 1989, but did not appear during the 1985 season. He pitched for the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, and Atlanta Braves.
Puleo was born and raised in New Jersey. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 13th round of the 1973 draft but did not sign. Five years later he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays as an amateur free agent. In April of 1981, the Blue Jays sent Puleo to the Mets as a “player to be named later” from a deal a week earlier. After spending most of 1981 in the minors, Puleo was brought up as a September call up and made is debut on September 16th.
In 1982 he made 24 starts and pitched in 36 games. He had a 9-9 record and a 4.47 season at the end of the year. Later that year we find what Puleo might be most famous for, being part of the deal to bring Tom Seaver back to New York. The Mets traded a minor leaguer plus Puleo and Lloyd McClendon to the Reds for Seaver. After two years with the Reds he was deal to Atlanta and pitched in the majors with them mostly in a relief role from 1986 through 1989.
His overall career record was 29-39 wit a 4.25 ERA.
The Score on Charlie Puleo – 7.0
Charlie has a pretty nice autograph and he fills up the card pretty well. Some of these are nice because the card isn’t that busy but some are a little too busy, like the ’84 Topps card. He has a great “C” and “P” but I notice a little hesitation in the “C” on a couple cards. Overall though these are pretty strong.
Thanks Mr. Puleo! I’m giving this return a 7.
