The Story of the Autograph

Calbert Cheaney is a former guard in the NBA. He played from 1993 to 2006 with the Washington Bullets/Wizards, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors.

Cheaney is an Indiana guy through and through. He was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana a standout high school player. He was injured during his senior year of high school and stayed under the radar after choosing to attend Indiana University. He played for Bobby Knight there and was the coaches first left-handed player. During his last three years those Hoosier teams spent 53 weeks in the Top 10 and 38 of them in the Top 5. He helped with win the Big 10 twice. The Bullets drafted him sixth overall in the 1993 NBA Draft.

Unfortunately he wasn’t as great in the NBA as he was in college, but he made quite a career for himself in the league as well. He had his best seasons in Washington with his best points per game average of 16.6 in 1994-95 and then followed that up with 15.1 the next year. He made his first post season appearance with them in 1997. He would later make another postseason appearance with the Jazz in 2003 when he was more of a role player.

After his playing career he worked as a coach for the Warriors. He moved on to college and worked for Tom Crean at Indiana. In 2013 he was an assistant coach with the St. Louis University Billikens. These days he works for the Indiana Pacers.

This is a nice return from Calbert. I think a lot of that goes to the marker that was chosen. That silver marker really is able to cut through the business and the dark spots of these cards. There’s a tendency for some dead spots in those signatures and these have it, but the silver looks really good. I think the Upper Deck card is my favorite, partially because I like the red Bullets uniforms.

Thanks Mr. Cheaney! I’m giving this return a 7.

I’m curious what the value of this signed card is, in your opinion Calbert signed 9 for me, along with many other items, to raise $ for locals battling cancer.

To me the value of any card, signed or not, is more “what does that person want to pay for it” more than “what do I want to ask for it”. But that’s just my take. This is a drastic example but I could ask you how much do you want for it and that might be $50. But if my response is thank but no thanks… then is it worth $50. Maybe I’m getting to philosophical – LOL.

I don’t sell any of the autographs I get, but I do trade with other TTM collectors from time to time. If I was to ask I would just start with the fact that it cost me postage to get it back and forth. Also, we don’t have proof without it being authenticated. So if your cards were received in person you know he signed them and that is worth more than me thinking he signed them. I don’t really know if that is helpful at all.

I also think that raising money for a charity is something that should be thought of as more the fundraising v. what someone gets back for it the money they give. Which is to say, that should get a higher amount IMO than just me and you buying cards from each other.
