The Story of the Autograph
Burt Hooton was a right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues from 1971 through 1985. He played for the Cubs (1971-1975), Dodgers (1975-1984), and Rangers (1984). He made one All-Star Team, won a World Series and was an NLCS MVP.
Hooton was born-and-raised in Texas and went to the University of Texas. He had a Hall of Fame career in college and is a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. After college the Cubs selected Hooton with the second overall pick in the 1971 draft. He made his major league debut in June of that year and never spent time in the minors, but only appeared in three games before that season ended. In his fourth game ever, his first of the 1972 season, he pitched a no-hitter against the Phillies.
In 1975 Hooton was traded to the Dodgers. Given he could find ways to win on some not-so-great Cubs teams, you had to figure he would find success in LA. He did right away and went 18-7 in his first year with them (he had two losses with the Cubs before he was traded). In 1978 he went 19-10 with a 2.71 ERA which might be on of the best seasons in his career. But 1981 might be the most special year of his career. He went 11-6, made his one-and-only All-Star appearance, won the NLCS MVP and won the World Series. He went 2-0 and allowed zero runs in 14.2 innings to earn that MVP.
These days “Happy”, as he was nicknamed, coaches for the Fort Wayne Tincaps.
The Score on Burt Hooton – 6.5
Burt has a pretty standard signature. I do like that you can read and that it takes up some good space on the card. It’s not super-special, but it does the job. I’m also looking at these and thinking how great a blue autograph is on a Dodger card. It just works so well to add some more Dodger Blue. I’m no Dodger fan, but I still appreciate it.
Thanks Mr. Hooton! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
