The Story of the Autograph
Bucky Dent is a former shortstop who played in the majors from 1973 to 1984. He played with the White Sox, Yankees, Rangers and Royals and he’s a three-time All-Star, two-time World Series winner, and a World Series MVP. But he’s probably best known for a home run that helped break the hearts of Red Sox fans in the 70’s.
Dent was born in Georgia but went to high school in Florida. The White Sox drafted him out of high school and made him the sixth overall pick in the 1970 MLB Draft. He made it to the majors in 1973 and played his first game on June 1st of that year. In 1977 he was traded to the Yankees.
The Yankees were World Series Champions in 1977 and 1978. The 1978 run is famous for Dent’s home run in the AL East division tie-breaker game against the Red Sox. It was’t that it was the homer to win the game, it was more that it came from a guy batting ninth in the order and who only ended up hitting 40 career homers that made it special to Yankee fans (and therefore made him the enemy of Red Sox fans, hence his full name in Boston of “Bucky Fucking Dent.” He would play great in the World Series that year and bat .417 to win the MVP for the Series.
He was traded to the Rangers and then later the Royals where he played a few games before calling it quits. He managed in the minors and majors for the Yankees after his playing days were over.
The Score on Bucky Dent – 7.0
This one really did almost get past me. When I got it back it came with a page that said basically “due to volume I have to charge.” So I didn’t throw the magazine out thank god. I put it aside and thought I would send to him again sometime. I was going through my stack and actually saw that HE SIGNED IT! I think I also missed it because it’s almost the same color as the magazine.
Bucky has a solid signature and this one is in a great place. The magazine doesn’t really give a great place to sign with size but he put it in the best spot. I’m glad I looked at this a little closer the second time around.
Thanks Mr. Dent! I’m giving this one a 7.
