The Story of the Autograph

Brian Propp, a dynamic left winger with a knack for finding the back of the net, was a staple in the NHL during the 1980s and early 1990s. Known for his scoring touch, consistency, and iconic “Guffaw” celebration, Propp enjoyed a successful career, most notably with the Philadelphia Flyers. His journey through professional hockey is a story of talent, resilience, and community impact.

Brian Phillip Propp was born on February 15, 1959, in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Canada. He grew up in a hockey-loving community and quickly showcased his talent on the ice. Propp played junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he demonstrated his goal-scoring ability. During his time there, Propp won two league scoring titles. His incredible performance made him a top prospect for the NHL, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to select him 14th overall in the 1979 NHL Draft.

Propp made an immediate impact in the NHL, scoring 34 goals in his rookie season. Over his 15-season career, he established himself as one of the league’s most reliable scorers and playmakers. Propp played for several teams, including:

  • Philadelphia Flyers (1979–1990)
  • Boston Bruins (1990)
  • Minnesota North Stars (1990–1993)
  • Hartford Whalers (1993–1994)

During his time with the Flyers, Propp helped lead the team to three Stanley Cup Finals (1980, 1985, and 1987). Though the Flyers fell short each time, Propp’s postseason performances were notable. He still holds the record for most career playoff goals (64) by a left winger.

Propp was a five-time All-Star and finished his career with impressive totals of 425 goals and 579 assists for 1,004 points in 1,016 regular-season games. His patented “Guffaw” celebration—where he would mimic a joyful laugh with an arm motion—became a fan favorite.

In addition to his NHL success, Propp represented Canada on the international stage. He played in the Canada Cup, helping Team Canada secure a championship in 1987. His versatility and scoring ability made him a valuable asset in international competitions.

After retiring from professional hockey, Propp embarked on a career in broadcasting and business development. However, his life took a challenging turn in 2015 when he suffered a stroke. The stroke affected his speech and mobility, but true to his resilient nature, Propp worked tirelessly on his recovery.

Brian Propp’s legacy is not only defined by his on-ice accomplishments but also by his contributions off the ice. He remains active in charitable work and continues to be a beloved figure in Philadelphia and beyond. Propp’s perseverance in the face of adversity, along with his dedication to helping others, highlights the character that endeared him to fans throughout his career. His journey from NHL star to health advocate showcases his enduring spirit and commitment to making a positive impact.

Whether remembered for his goal-scoring prowess, his “Guffaw,” or his advocacy work, Brian Propp’s story is a testament to strength, determination, and the lasting influence of a true hockey legend.

The Score on Brian Propp – 6.5

Brian did something that I always find interesting. He signed he card (or at least two and two) differently. Two of the cards he personalized and then the other two he didn’t. It’s those quirks that I always find interesting and I wonder what he was thinking or the approach he takes to signing everyone’s cards. I think my favorite of these is the 1990 Upper Deck card.

Thanks Mr. Propp! I’m giving this return a 6.5.

This is my second successful return from him. To see the first successful return, check out my post from June 2022.
